German course B1.1 – The next step towards confident German

Here you will learn to speak, write, read and understand German better and more confidently.
📘 What is language level B1.1?
German B1 is the third level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
German B1 comes after German A1 (beginner) and German A2 (basic knowledge).
With B1, you can express yourself independently in German.
This means that you do not always need help when speaking or writing German.
You can hold simple conversations, express opinions and describe experiences.

The B1 course is for you if you:
- have already taken an A2 course
- can communicate in German in everyday situations

📚 What will you learn in the German course B1.1?
In the German course B1.1, you will learn:
- how you talk about experiences, plans and dreams
- how you express opinions and give reasons
- how you talk about topics such as health, travel, work or leisure
- how to write letters, emails or job applications
- how you read and understand texts, for example newspaper articles or informational texts
- how you conduct conversations, for example with colleagues, at government offices or at the doctor’s
- important grammar, e.g. subjunctive II, relative clauses, subordinate clauses, passive voice
The lessons are taught in clear language.
The teachers help you step by step.
There are many exercises for speaking, listening, reading and writing.
🏫 How is the course structured?
The B1.1 course has many lessons.
Each lesson has a theme – for example: work, housing, health, the environment, media or culture.
In each lesson, you will learn:
- new words and phrases
- important grammar
- listening and speaking exercises
- reading and writing tasks
You will work alone, in groups and with the whole class.
You will also be given homework so that you can continue practising at home.
💬 How are the lessons going?
The lessons are varied:
you read texts, listen to dialogues, take part in short role-plays, write texts and talk to other participants.
The teachers speak slowly and clearly.
They explain everything with examples.
If you don’t understand something, they will help you.
🕒 How long does the course last?
It varies.
A standard B1.1 course lasts, for example:
- 3 to 6 months with lessons 3–5 times per week
- 1 to 2 months for an intensive course (daily)
The exact duration depends on the provider and your learning pace.
📝 Is there an examination?
Yes. At the end, you can take the German B1 exam.
The exam consists of:
- Reading
- Listening
- Writing
- Speaking
If you pass the exam, you will receive the official B1 certificate.
For example, from the Goethe Institute or the telc Institute.
With the certificate, you can:
- apply for training
- apply for naturalisation
- continue learning German at B2 level
