German Level A1

German Level A1: Your Essential Foundation for Learning German

The A1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the foundation of your journey into the German language. Designed specifically for complete beginners, these courses require no prior knowledge. At this stage, you will acquire the essential linguistic tools needed to handle everyday situations, express basic personal needs, and establish your first connections in German-speaking environments.

Furthermore, an accredited A1 certificate (such as the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1) is a legal requirement for many official administrative processes, notably for the German spouse reunification visa (Ehegattennachzug) or Au-Pair programs.

What You Will Learn in German Level A1

Our curriculum systematically guides you through the four fundamental communication skills:

  • Speaking and Conversation: Learn how to introduce yourself, share details about your origin, family, residence, job, and interests. Practice essential daily interactions, including grocery shopping, restaurant orders, asking for directions, and making appointments.

  • Listening Comprehension: Understand familiar words and straightforward phrases when people speak clearly and at a measured pace. Learn to navigate train station and airport announcements, pricing information, and simple phone dialogues.

  • Reading Comprehension: Extract key information from short, accessible real-world texts such as informational notices, signs, public posters, menus, product labels, and simple emails.

  • Written Communication: Fill in standard administrative forms (at government offices, banks, or hotels) with your personal details, and write short personal notes, messages, or greeting postcards.

  • Grammar Fundamentals: Understand German sentence structure (declarative sentences, question-word queries, yes/no questions), the present tense conjugation of regular and irregular verbs, separable verbs, articles (der, die, das), the accusative and dative cases, possessive pronouns, basic negations (nicht / kein), and an introduction to the conversational past tense (Perfekt).
